Entry Dates
Submissions for the BBC National Short Story Award 2026, in partnership with Cambridge University, will open at 9:00 a.m. (GMT) on Wednesday, 14 January 2026.
The final deadline for entries is 9:00 a.m. (GMT) on Monday, 16 March 2026.
Late submissions will not be accepted.
How to Submit
Writers are strongly advised to submit their entries via the official online Entry Form as early as possible to avoid any last-minute technical issues.
Important: This award is open only to writers who have a previous publication record. Applicants should carefully review the full eligibility criteria before submitting.
Submission Guidelines
Before entering, please follow these steps carefully:
1. Check Eligibility
Read the Terms and Conditions thoroughly to confirm that both the author and the short story meet all eligibility requirements.
Submitting an entry automatically confirms acceptance of all terms.
2. Format Your Short Story
Your submission must meet the following formatting rules:
One entry per author
Written in English
Maximum length: 8,000 words
Typed manuscript
Font: any font, 12-point, black
Double-spaced text
No page numbers
Include a front page with:
Story title
Total word count
Do not include the author’s name anywhere in the story
(except in typeset files where removal is unavoidable)
3. File Format
Save your short story as an Adobe PDF, using the story title as the file name.
Previously published stories may be submitted as typeset PDFs, but all author names must be removed from headers and footers.
If your story is in Microsoft Word, you can save it as a PDF via:
File → Save As → Select PDF
4. Submit Online
